What is VIPKid?
VIPKid is an online education platform that connects native English speakers in Canada and North America to students in China learning to speak English. Today, I will share the things you really need to know before signing your contract and how to be successful in the classroom.
Many people have a lot of questions when they first hear about VIPKid, just like I did.
The first video I want to talk about today is the video I made sharing an insiders look.
The first major tip I have for you is to use a….
DIGITAL CAMERA OPTION
Personally, I use ManyCam. There are others, but this is the one I found to be the most helpful and has a free option.
One of the biggest things you need to keep in mind is not to start the class early.
If you do, you will be very sad because you cannot end the class until the official finish time.
I do not start my classes until 10 seconds before it begins.
The students and parents can see when you enter the classroom though and because of that, they can get confused on why you aren’t starting the class.
To avoid this confusion, make a digital screen cast in ManyCam that shares a fun picture and some text that states, “Class will begin soon.”
For props, I have 1 small basket that I use with tangible props.
ManyCam has a plethora of images and gifs that you can use.
The best part is that it’s instant and you can search as you go through the class with the student.
This allows you to be more effective as the teacher and present the student with meaningful learning.
For example, if the lesson comes to a slide with a foal on it, you can pull up an additional image of a foal and show them right on the screen.
Every single reward I use is also digital.
There is an amazing group of teachers that created slideapp.glideapp.io that has a reward system for every single lesson within VIPKid.
This includes all the Major Courses and all Supplementary.
To access it, go to the website and in the bottom right hand corner you will see a lesson button – click it.
Then, go to VIPKid Home > Class > Classrooms > Upcoming Classes
From there, copy the course name exactly as it is, and paste it into the slideapp.
Then choose Extensions and Rewards.
From there, choose the option you want. I usually always get the Find A Star (FAS) because it engages the student to pick numbers).
To present it, click the drop down menu and select presenter view.
Then, go back to ManyCam and right click on the screen to make it show.
Many Cam > elect the screen you want > right click> desktop > app window > select the window
**ManyCam will remember how you set everything up.
Giving feedback is critical and if you don’t do it, you will lose pay.
You have 6 hours to complete the feedback after each class.
You get 5 minutes between each class and I have gotten to the point of being able to complete it in-between classes.
Thankfully, there is another awesome solution!
VIPKid Teacher Portal > Class > Classrooms > Select the class MATERIALS tab > Sort to Feedback Template > Copy and paste.
I always find gender neutral ones without names for the content feedback.
Then in the notes section of my computer, I have a personalized feedback section that I copy and paste and personalize with each students name.
I hope this was helpful!
Below is a video walking you through each step. 🙂
